Editor’s Journal: First Quote Questions

Since my main article focuses on individuals who have been deported from the United States to Tijuana, I want my first quote to be impactful, emotional and capable of setting the tone for their story.

I have a few questions in mind that could lead to that kind of response:

  • Can you tell me about the moment you learned you were being deported?
  • How did deportation change your life and your family’s life?
  • Where do you feel most at home now?

These initial questions allow the person to share their experiences and reveal the human side of immigration. My goal is to capture a quote that reflects how deportation affects families and individuals beyond the moment someone is forced to leave.

Signing off,

Violet Garcia
